4th Year Medical Students

ELECTIVE ROTATIONS

The South Carolina AHEC coordinates placement for 4th year medical students interested in rural Elective Rotations. The Regional Health Professions Student (HPS) coordinators are a major resource for orienting students to communities, networking in the communities, and identifying and conducting student projects. Students from South Carolina's medical schools as well as to out-of- state students who have completed core clinical training from LCME approved medical schools and accredited schools of osteopathic medicine are eligible to receive AHEC assistance for placement in the sites described below. These electives focus on multiple specialties and are offered throughout the state. Students are often provided housing at no cost.

The AHEC electives outlined in the table below can be requested any time. In addition to any paperwork required by your college, students MUST:

1. Complete the AHEC Student Profile Form
2. Complete a AHEC Rotation Request Form
3. Send both forms to appropriate Regional AHEC Coordinator.
4. Complete paperwork required by the desired rotation site (such as immuization records, background check).

Rebecca S. Seignious South Carolina Family Medicine Interest Day

The Family Medicine Interest Day is designed to promote the specialty of family medicine as a career option and to recruit medical students into the South Carolina AHEC’s Family Medicine Residency Training Programs. Medical students have the opportunity to attend workshops and to network with family medicine residency training program faculty members and their residents. Medical students from South Carolina medical schools and medical students from all the southeastern medical schools are invited to attend. This event is a joint venture between the South Carolina AHEC, the South Carolina Family Practice Residency Programs and the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians.
