Shawana S. Moore DNP, APRN, WHNP - BC, PNAP, FAAN
Shawana S. Moore, DNP, MSN, CRNP, WHNP-BC, is a nationally recognized, board-certified women’s health nurse practitioner who specializes in providing women’s and gender-related care throughout the lifespan. She is the chair of the National Association of Nurse Practitioner in Women’s Health. Shawana served as the director of the Women’s Health–Gender Related Nurse Practitioner Program at Jefferson College of Nursing from 2014-2022. She was instrumental in redesigning curriculum, increasing first-time certification pass rates, and increasing student enrollment in the women’s health track during her time at Jefferson. She is an associate professor, clinical track and the director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program at Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Emory University. In her role at Emory, Shawana is preparing DNP graduates to lead system level change and implement and translate existing knowledge, evidence and data to transform practice.
Shawana is committed to providing women’s and reproductive healthcare to underserved populations. In her work as a women’s health nurse practitioner with healthcare organizations, she has cared for women and the gender-related populations across the lifespan, mostly in underserved areas, for more than a decade in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Camden, New Jersey. She actively maintains clinical practice in the state of Georgia in a private practice and as a volunteer for The Center for Black Women’s Wellness.
Shawana has developed a nurse-led mentorship, the Girls Empowerment Program, to support the healthy growth and development of adolescent girls in underserved communities. It serves as a novel approach to health promotion and primary prevention among adolescent females.
She serves and has served on national boards, committees, taskforces and editorial advisory boards dedicated to women’s healthcare. Her research interests include women’s health, gender-affirming care, environmental/climate and women’s health, adolescent female empowerment, pre-pregnancy counseling, well-woman care, contraception, maternal obesity, gynecological disorders, telehealth in the women’s healthcare setting, diversity, inclusion, and equity. Shawana presents on these topics locally and nationally.
Shawana is the author of scholarly blogs and numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and a contributor to national position statements for the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health. She has helped develop podcasts and video productions focused on the promotion of health equity.
Her research efforts include an examination of HPV vaccine uptake in women involved in the legal criminal system. As a National Institute Health (NIH)-designated early investigator, Shawana will take advantage of the NCI’s Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) program, which provides additional training to early career investigators.
Shawana is a 2011 and 2013 recipient of the Independence Blue Cross Nurses for Tomorrow Scholarship. Other awards and grants include Under 40 Award, National Black Nurses Association, 2021; Stratton Foundation Grant, 2020; Thomas Jefferson University, Community Driven Research Grant, 2020, 2018; March of Dimes NJ Chapter Community Grant, 2015; USPHS Nurse Traineeship Grant Award, 2012; and Outstanding Capstone Award, Thomas Jefferson University, 2011.
Shawana holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in biology from Wilberforce University. She earned a second Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN), a Master of Science in nursing (MSN) with a specialty in women’s health, and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Thomas Jefferson University. She is an alumnus of the National League of Nursing LEAD Institute and Jefferson Leadership Academy.
