Description
As we face the increase in substance abuse among youth and young adults, the facilitators will discuss the dangers of drug use and how to prevent misuse and addiction, the effects on the community, statistics about South Carolina, and the use of Naloxone.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define what are opioids and the different types
  • Learn the opioid crisis statistics for South Carolina
  • Define characteristics of individuals impacted by opioids misuse
  • Identify the groups most affected by the misuse of opioids
  • Increase awareness and knowledge of the potential health effects of opioid addiction
  • Describe the role of naloxone in the management of individuals at risk for overdose

The sessions are presented as part of the South Carolina AHEC Health Careers Program targeted at high school, undergraduate, and gap year pre-health students. A certificate of participation is only given to those who attend and complete an evaluation. This program does not meet professional development requirements for practicing health professionals.
