Description
Dual diagnosis, also known as co-occurring disorders, refers to the simultaneous presence of a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder and requires an integrated approach to treatment and support. This workshop aims to equip mental health professionals with the necessary tools and strategies to provide services to this population.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of dual diagnosis.
  • Explore the definition, prevalence, and various types of co-occurring disorders, including common combinations of mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Recognize diagnostic challenges and assessment techniques.
  • Identify the unique diagnostic challenges faced when working with individuals with dual diagnoses and learn effective assessment strategies to accurately evaluate and diagnose co-occurring disorders.
  • Explore evidence-based treatment approaches.
  • Review evidence-based interventions and treatment models specifically designed for individuals with dual diagnoses, including integrated treatment approaches and harm reduction strategies.
  • Acquire practical skills to engage, motivate, and build therapeutic alliances with individuals with dual diagnosis, including techniques for addressing resistance and ambivalence.
