Description
This is a fast-paced, interesting workshop which incorporates video vignettes and case histories throughout the day in a variety of settings where counselors may be expected to report to officials (police, DSS, etc.) when encountering legal and ethical dilemmas. Some of the areas we will touch on include internet dilemmas, abuse and criminal issues, substance use issues, dual relationship issues and boundary violations. An Ethical Decision-Making Model will also be discussed. Legal issues will be spotlighted, with tips on risk management. Grievances and disciplinary actions will also be reviewed/discussed, with tips on how to avoid them! Discussion will also be had as to what the court experience (in deposition or in open court) is like.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Determine when and where to report incidents.
  • Outline areas where confidentiality may be breached (by law).
  • Identify an Ethical Decision-Making Model.
  • Discern dual relationships and identify ways to avoid them when possible.
  • Employ good risk management skills.
