Description
This is a 2 part course and you must register for both Part 1 and Part 2. A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is a special forensic nurse, who provides comprehensive, trauma informed care to sexual assault survivors, including medical and forensic examinations, evidence collection, and support. These nurses may also be called upon to testify in court. This training is a blended learning program with 24 hours of theory and lectures completed online, along with a pre and post test. The online portion is 24 hours. Upon completion of the online component, you will receive 16 hours of live training. All course work must be completed online prior to the live component. Please note: this program describes scenarios and photographs that may be disturbing.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • define forensic nursing.
  • verbalize a summation of forensic nursing history.
  • identify 3 roles within forensic nursing.
  • define trauma informed care.
  • list the goals and benefits of a forensic nursing program.
  • discuss the scope and standards of practice of forensic nursing
  • identify medical obligations of the forensic nurse.
  • define vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and ways to prevent it.
  • explain the current principles in forensic nursing evidence-based practice.
  • discuss ethics from an individual/personal, social, and forensic nursing standpoint.
  • discuss how ethics are shaped by culture and what ethical considerations mean to a forensic nurse.
  • define sexual violence, sexual assault, and rape as well as explain some common myths about each.
  • explain the facts and statistics surrounding sexual violence, rape and sexual assault.
  • discuss the types of psychological reactions a trauma victim may experience, give examples of the types of primitive responses to trauma.
  • explain reasons for non-reporting, and discuss the influences of age/gender/culture and sexuality on the experience of sexual assault.
