Please join us at the 2024 Pediatric Symposium where a wealth of information will be presented by experts in their fields of expertise. Topics included in this year's symposium are Sickle Cell Disease, high-risk medications, pediatric trauma, self-harm and basic mental health well-being.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
  • Recognize SCD in the pediatric patient.
  • Discuss patient assessment for SCD.
  • Identify treatment options for patients admitted to the hospital with SCD.
  • Review the signs and symptoms of serious complications.
  • Discuss the concept of high-alert (high-risk) medications in pediatric patients.
  • Identify drug classes considered to have high-alert status.
  • Describe the various strategies for monitoring the use of high alert (high-risk) medications.
  • Identify scenarios of potential high-risk medication misuse.
  • Identify fact from myth regarding self-harm behaviors.
  • Identify risk and protective factors related to self-harm.
  • Discuss collaborative approaches to treatment.
  • Describe the cycle of crisis response, as well as intervention opportunities.
  • Identify state resources to share with stakeholders.
  • Describe the physiologic characteristics of pediatric trauma.
  • Discuss the initial evaluation and resuscitation of pediatric trauma patients.
  • Explain trauma-related wound care, chest tubes and surgical drains.
  • Recognize injury patterns and “red flags” of concern.
