Description
Splinting is an intervention for both neurological and orthopedic populations across the lifespan. Almost any upper extremity orthopedic treatment regime can be supported with splinting. Several elements of splinting with be discussed, a hands-on splinting lab will follow in which the participant will demonstrate splinting objectives, the use of anatomical landmarks, and employ proper mechanical and constructive principles in the construction of a versatile wrist cock-up splint. Several techniques for basic splinting will be addressed.
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate the categories of splints and objectives to static splinting.
  • Employ mechanical and construction principles while using anatomical landmarks for splint construction and fabrication.
  • Construct versatile wrist cock up and thumb spita splint of which the construction principles can be generalized to other static splints.
  • Examine the impact of splinting on occupational performance.
