Description
Past research has purported interventions of constraint, intensity, and repetition as key factors to stroke recovery. Stroke recovery, however, is multifactorial depending on the person’s social determinants of health and most importantly, lesion location and the extent of damage, which dictates impairment. The key to recovery and subsequent minimization of impairment and potential for maximal outcomes is to understand the role of the brain in recovery as it relates to motor output. This course addresses the predictors of stroke outcome, neuroanatomical regions responsible for motor function and how those regions are impacted by a lesion. Motor versus functional recovery is defined and discussed. Treatment interventions for motor recovery are analyzed for impact on movement. Therapy practitioners are given the opportunity to demonstrate clinical decision-making and critical thinking skills regarding motor versus functional recovery by answering questions for written and video case studies that address impairment and treatment interventions for the upper extremity
Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Differentiate motor recovery from functional recovery.
  • Identify the factors that determine CVA impairment.
  • Predict how CVA impacts normal movement based on lesion location from a motor perspective.
  • Design treatment interventions targeting motor impairments that address daily living skills and mobility.
  • Evaluate those interventions for application of social determinants of health.
  • Integrate information learned to justify treatment interventions which can be immediately applied to neurologic rehabilitation practice.
