Description
The purpose of the Controlled Substances and Immunization Update is to provide pharmacists and pharmacy technicians with an overview of the use of buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder and an evaluation of the new, non-opioid pain medication, suzetrigine, using the STEPS Analysis (Safety, Tolerability, Efficacy, Price, and Simplicity). The second hour of this 2-hour activity will be devoted to reviewing the 2024-2025 CDC Adult and Pediatric Immunization Schedules, highlighting any new Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations, and summarizing key changes to the SC Joint Pharmacist Administered Vaccines Committee protocol for the administration of vaccines by pharmacists.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the indications, key adverse events, and precautions associated with buprenorphine and suzetrigine.
  • Discuss the efficacy of these medications for the management of acute and chronic pain.
  • Discuss the use of buprenorphine in the treatment of opioid use disorder.
  • Recognize any important drug interactions and pharmacokinetic parameters that are clinically relevant for each medication.
  • Highlight any significant changes to the CDC 2024-2025 Adult and Pediatric Immunization Schedules.
  • Identify best practice recommendations from the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).
  • Discuss any new vaccine additions or changes in administration schedules for vaccines currently recommended in the adult and pediatric immunization schedules.
  • Review recent changes to the SC Joint Pharmacist Administered Vaccines Committee protocol for the administration of vaccines by pharmacists
