Trends of Available PGY-1 Residency Positions and Practicing Physicians in South Carolina, 2004-2023

Description:
To address anticipated physician shortages, South Carolina expanded its medical education capacity in the 2010s with the addition of two new medical schools and larger class sizes. As the number of medical school graduates increased, the number of graduate medical education programs and entry-level residency positions in the state also grew. This brief describes the trends in the number of South Carolina medical school graduates and first-year residency positions from 2004-2023 and compares them to trends in the number of active physicians in the state.
